to change the oil seals. It doesnt make a difference where the piston is at either, although much better to do it with the piston up to ensure you dont lose a valve inside the cylinder if you lose pressure during the procedure. Seems like it might make sense when doing leakdown tests to check with pistons at various positions in the stroke if ring seal is suspected to be bad due to defects in the cylinder wall (usually common in cylinders 5 & 6). If timing belt or cams are removed this shouldnt be an issue.
